About
Willem Holtrop (1990) is an Amsterdam-based artist whose work blends classical art history with contemporary visual culture. Growing up in the Veluwe and navigating dyslexia, he developed a distinctive visual language that allows him to express complex narratives freely. After earning his BFA and a Master of Artistic Research at HKU, and a Master of Painting at the Frank Mohr Institute, Holtrop honed a practice rooted in intuition, imagination, and layered storytelling.
His paintings often feature dreamlike scenes with mythological and modern influences-Instagram imagery, old masters, personal props, all interwoven into richly detailed compositions. Female figures, often drawn from close friends, recur as central, almost heroic subjects. Holtrop works primarily with oil paint on linen, combining it with spray paint, linocuts, stencils, and textures like bubble wrap to achieve his vivid, tactile surfaces.
Themes
In creating his works, Holtrop draws from an extensive visual archive that includes images from old masters in art history and mythological themes, as well as visuals from advertisements, social media, and video games. By merging these images, he explores how different narrative elements interact when combined. He often begins with a central figure and uses close friends and inspiring individuals as models or actors in his dreamlike scenes. These are frequently female figures, whom he portrays in a powerful way, sometimes elevating them to heroic status. Various props and elements appear in his work, such as furniture that was once part of his own interior. At first glance, the individual components may seem easy to interpret, but the deeper you delve into the work, the more questions it raises rather than answers. Holtrop creates imaginative and magical worlds, where familiarity is found amid the uncanny.
